Javier Arenas' oval Imperial jewelry box, gold-finished with fine filigree work centered on a lotus motif. At 2.76 kilograms it's compact but the density of detail on the lid and base is disproportionate to its size — meant to be picked up and turned over as much as displayed shut. Scaled for everyday spaces — a desk, a mantel, a bookshelf — but built to be noticed. The 24-karat gold finish is sealed under lacquer to resist tarnish; a soft, dry cloth is all it needs to keep its shine.
